The powerhouse who started Baphymele childrens’ home is a wondeful lady, Rosalia Mashale or Mama Rosie as she’s fondly known. The children’s home now provides these orphans and vulnerable children with a stable, loving, and permanent home. It also serves as a place of safety for children in crisis 24 hours a day. Children are sometimes brought to Baphumelele by police or social services as a temporary place of refuge, others have been in Baphumelele’s care for some years. At any given time there are over 100 children between 0 and 18 years of age, being cared for and accommodated. Because of the wide age range, many families of siblings who otherwise would have to be separated are placed together at Baphumelele.

Durbanite Jes Foord became a heroine to many South Africans when she showed courage and selflessness by establishing The Jes Foord Foundation (JFF), following her traumatic rape by four men in 2008.

One of her initiatives is the Handbag Project. New or used handbags are donated, containing items that can assist a rape victim during the initial reporting process at the police station. These are things such as a facecloth, soap, deodorant spray, new underwear, etc. Typically, any item of clothing with forensic evidence on it must be taken from the rape victim, at a time she already feels so vulnerable. A handbag with ‘comfort’ items in it can go a long way in helping the victim feel a little better. The most important item in the bag however, is a letter with a few words of encouragement to restore some hope to the victim during this traumatic time. Jes said it can be a few words or an essay but something from your heart to theirs.

Our involvement at the Grosvenor Guest House is to encourage friends and guests to bring along a used bag filled with the necessary goodies which will impart a message of love and support to a rape victim in his/her time of need. We will act as a collection point and ensure that all contributions are delivered to the Jes Foord Foundation for redistribution.

Vintage With Love is a charity supported by Grosvenor Guest House in which clothes and fashion accessories are collected and resold at bi-annual sales in Cape Town. All proceeds go to literacy based charities.

How You Can Help Vintage With Love
We are looking for any item of clothing, shoes or a fashion accessory, once loved and in perfect condition. We all have items of clothing that no longer fit or have only been worn a few times and have been forgotten so please don’t be frightened to donate anything and let us be the judge. And if we find items of jumble amongst the donations that are not suitable for the vintage sale, they will be donated directly to relevant charities. We encourage guests to bring along 1 or 2 pieces of gently worn clothing in their bags and donate them to this worthy cause.

Because we care for our delicate ecosystem and our precious guests, we’ve gone the extra mile in sourcing skincare products which are not only kind to the environment but kind to your skin.

Our complimentary Rooibos extract products are produced with extracts of the Rooibos plant which was awarded the Geographic Indicator Status by the European Union in 2014. This effectively means that only Rooibos which is grown in the Western Cape Cederberg area may carry the name – similar to Champagne!

The benefits of Rooibos are endless and research is ongoing as this precious resource produces more and more surprises. Not only does Rooibos provide a soothing and calming tea but its benefits are multiplied when extracts are combined in skincare cosmetics.

Rooibos is naturally high in ascorbic acid, zinc and antioxidants and recent research has shown that the green extract is effective in limiting the replication of precancerous skin cells. This reinforces the protective benefit offered against damaging and ageing environmental factors.

When in search of a refreshing glass of H2O at the Grosvenor Guest House, rest assured you’ll be getting the best. There’s a natural spring located in Newlands which has been the source of spring water for the South African Breweries since 1820.

Newlands Brewery has built a spring water collection point on the corner of Letterstedt Road and Main Road, Newlands, where members of the public can come to collect spring water, free of charge. The Grosvenor Guest House ensures that there is a constant supply of fresh spring water for guests so no need for bottled water at all.

Since February 2020 a new collection point has also been established for spring water collection known as the Bradwell spring located on the corner of Upper Buitenkant and Ludlow Streets in Vredehoek.
